As the festivities continue through the new year, one of my favorite “little helpers” in the realm of digestion are bitter herb formulas. Bitters, a general term used to describe liquid herbal extracts of varying formulas, are taken at the end of a meal in a small amount of water (warm is best), or tea to aid in the digestive process. Bitter herbs have a wide variety of effects on the gastrointestinal tract including increasing the secretion of digestive fluids such as saliva, hydrochloric acid, and bile, as well as stimulating peristalsis, the wave like motion the digestive tract uses to move food along. Bitter herbs can aid in healthy liver function and stimulate gut lining repair. By supporting proper digestion, bitter herbal formulas reduce the formation of gas and bloating and help the body break down food and absorb nutrients more efficiently.
Because bitter herbal formulas can vary, just as each individual’s needs can, please check with your practitioner or contact me to set up an appointment to find one that suits your specific requirements.
